Our MOST SPECIAL Leather

Our MOST SPECIAL Leather

What makes our leather special?

Our leather is all natural, ultra durable, vegetable tanned and made fully by hand-

Only 10% of all leather is vegetable-tanned nowadays, which is bad for the environment and human skin, as regular leather is processed with dangerous chemicals like chrome for example.

Tanning is necessary to alter the protein structure of the hide, causing it to become leather. In essence, these organic substances serve three functions: preserving, strengthening and giving colour to the hide. Tree bark, leaves and roots are often favoured in vegetable tanning due to their exceptionally high tannin concentration. Some commonly used tree species used to make veg tan leather include:
Birch, Catechu, Chestnut, Mimosa, Oak and Willow.

You can avoid the waste of fast fashion as our leather is full-grain, meaning the entire skin of the animal is kept intact and not shaven down. So you can carry timeless style that can be passed down for generations.

The animals that supply our leather come from the Moroccan meat industry, never raised just for their leather. Under Islamic law, we ensure humane treatment of animals. They are well cared for, fed a natural diet, and free from hormones and antibiotics. Halal slaughter is believed to be more humane as it focuses on minimising the animal's pain and stress, and other animals shouldn't be witness of this process.

We value each animals skin, so we don't disregard a hide only because it has minor details like scars or soft creasing. We see it as unique characteristics and proof of realness, rather than imperfection.

We want you to love your Artisan Stories products as much as we do, so if there is anything that you would like to know about our ethical policies that is not mentioned above please don’t hesitate to contact us via email at info@artisanstorieslondon.co.uk
